A brief description of company’s business:
ABYC is a non-profit boating-safety organization. For almost 50 years, our technical committees have been writing standards for the design, construction, maintenance, and equipage of boats. Most of you know of these standards which are some times called the "National Building Code" for boats.
A brief description of speaker’s role in the company:
Ed currently serves as the curriculum-development administrator for the American Boat & Yacht Council. In this role, He is responsible for all course and certification program development and delivery.
Ed Sherman currently serves as the Curriculum Designer and Senior Instructor for all of ABYC’s educational offerings. He also serves as the Senior Staff writer for ABYC and manages the educational program quality control efforts.
Ed is a 35 year industry veteran who has worked in a variety of roles within the marine industry, to include sales, service and management positions.
Ed is the past chairman of the Marine Technology Department at New England Institute of Technology and past President of the Rhode Island (RI) Marine Trades Association.
He also served as President of the International Sailing Institute, a RI group that founded the first Maritime Theme Charter primary school in Rhode Island.
In 1998, Ed was the recipient of the Dennis Snow President’s award from the American Boat Builder’s and Repairers Association for his curriculum development work for that group.
Ed is an award winning technical writer who has authored many articles over the years for Cruising World magazine and spent seven years as their Electronics Editor. He is a frequent contributor to Professional Boat Builder magazine.
Ed is the author of three books to date, Outboard Engines, Maintenance Troubleshooting andRepair, and The Powerboater’s Guide to Electrical Systems.
Ed co-authored the second edition of the Minor Brotherton classic, The Twelve Volt Bible for Boats. His most recent work, Advanced Electrical Troubleshooting for the Marine Technician was releasedin May 2007.
